• THE BIRTH OF A SCIENCE-FICTION GRAPHIC UNIVERSE •
I present my collaboration with the young and talented writer Mathieu Lefèvre for the production of a science fiction graphic novel entitled Nelly Chanevert. In this project, I illustrated the first twelve passages of the book to bring this incredible universe to life.
Why Nelly Chanevert? Nelly Chanevert, the main character of the story, is a physiotherapist and practices her profession in the small town of Oressif. A fishing village located near the Noirmoutier salt marshes. This character is fascinating, with a complex personality and well-defined character traits. She is both strong and vulnerable, determined and sensitive.
An enigmatic story The beginning of the novel immediately plunges us into a strange and mysterious atmosphere. because the story is written like a logbook kept by Nelly, she recounts her meeting with a young fisherman named Edgar who will lead her to a most delirious discovery: there is another human species "Homo hacténus". A great complicity will be born between our two friends who will strive as best they can to highlight this new discovery. Homo hactenus have a completely different way of communicating. These giants with robust and agile bodies communicate thanks to wooden amulets with which they juggle. Each gesture and sequence of aerobatics has a meaning and allows them to be understood by others...
From imagination to creation Mathieu Lefèvre knew how to create deep and authentic characters that immediately captivate the reader's attention. Characters that I enjoyed illustrating and staging in this graphic science fiction universe. I wanted to reflect in the illustrations the dark and bewitching atmosphere of the story which is set up as the story progresses. I used mixed media to give a textural effect to the images and add depth. The illustrations are accompanied by texts that allow the reader to easily follow the story. The creation of this new species of man was a real challenge. I was able to explore new graphic horizons and bring this fascinating universe to life. I'm sure readers will be captivated by Nelly Chanevert's story and I can't wait to see this project come to fruition.
